that sounds familiar, it is the same weapon used in the shootings newtown connecticut. neither obtained their guns illegally. we're trying to figure out how to stop these massacres, one is far too many, and they seem to be a terrifyingly regular occurrence in our country. still, these horrific events shock us so deeply because they remain rare. and because the circumstances are each so specific, it is very difficult to government policy to prevent them. most of the policies we think about wouldn't have worked. the federal private sales loophole often called the gun show loophole should be closed. but there is no evidence the killers bought their guns at gun shows or through the loophole. background checks should be stricter, the guns used in western new york and connecticut were not registered in the names of the shooters. waiting periods make sense for gun buyers and particularly to prevent suicide. they would have had little effect on killers who did not purchase their guns through legitimate channels. the assault weapons rifle ban should never have been prevented to
